How is it going? Inquiring minds want to know!!!!
We have had our Sleepers and Day houses out going on our second week now and fishing has been pretty good. There have been some slow times for sure but all in all good fishing. Now as far as our Lake Access!
Well!! As many of you know – it is an ice heave haven out here! We are keeping our Lake Access open to ATV’s and Snowmobile’s due to the conditions we found yesterday.
Dale ventured out to see of the possibilities of somehow getting through or around ice heaves in order to open to vehicles and fish house’s. The results were bittersweet.
There may be a way but it will entail literally “busting” through some of the ice heaves and we will not know if that will even work! The “BITTER” part of this is the crack by Gull Rock that run’s East and West! The ice on both sides of the crack, in the area that Dale checked, is only 3 inches to 5 inches thick. You and I both know 3 inches will not hold any vehicle, will not hold much of anything!
So what does this mean???? We will continue to only be open to ATV’s and Snowmobiles and we will be back out there to check the conditions again in the next 48 hours. We are talking about going out to that area and clean it off so she can gain some inches. We may have all gained a few inches over the holiday that we now will spend time working off but not the case here. WE WANT TO GAIN INCHES HERE ON LAKE OF THE WOODS – GULL ROCK AREA!!!
To top it off we have build some pretty darn nice bridges this year. The one bridge is out at the end of the staked trail that heads towards Gull Rock! We also have a staked trail with smooth sailing and NO crack or bridge towards Twin Islands.
As we have said over the past week – PLEASE AS YOU VENTURE OUT ON YOUR OWN – CHECK THE ICE AS YOU GO – ice thickness can change quite fast!!!!

Continue to find various ice thickness!
We will continue to keep our Winter Lake Access Closed for another week due to areas of unsafe ice.
We will continue to monitor the ice conditions daily and update through Facebook, our website www.dalefishinglakeofthewoods.net and our Land line 218-442-6661 which you may call between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. 7 days a week.
Visibility still low, 100 yards or so, pretty good wind whipping again today and is suppose to get stronger as the day goes on.
Unable to see the lake area that was only 2-3 inches of ice on Sunday due to low visibility. Snow accumulation for us was 8-11 inches of snow. Yesterday spent the day plowing snow and getting a few repairs done.
As soon as the visibility clears and wind calms down we will have a new update. Expecting improving conditions tomorrow.

Fishing report and ice condtion update
Fishing Report For November 29, 2017
The lake locked up with ice but still a few open spots. Some local guides have ventured out finding varying ice conditions. So far, a bit of rough ice near shore but not bad. Water clarity appears good with fish being caught by guides testing. Resorts will be out measuring ice thickness and assessing ice conditions during the week. Safety is #1. The Rainy River has a skim of ice across it with only a few open areas left. Back bays are frozen over with 4 to 8 inches in many areas. Water temperature remains 32.2 degrees Fahrenheit.
On an average year, resort fish houses get out on the main lake around Dec 10th and stay on the ice through March 31st. ATV’s and collapsible fish houses will get out a bit earlier based on when resorts who maintain ice roads feel it is safe. When resorts open ice roads, stay on marked trails and don’t deviate for safety. Walleyes and saugers are staged up nicely along south shore with fish populations favorable.
NW Angle is frozen in most areas with a few areas with current still remaining open. Resorts are checking ice conditions, starting to mark initial trails. Not ready yet. Safety first. Follow daily reports at Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook page.
There we have it folks from our Tourism Bureau in Baudette, MN
Dale and I are checking the lake 2 + times a day and we will keep you posted as the ice condition’s change. Right now with 2 days of strong winds there is a large area of open water. This morning we could see white covering the entire lake with the light dusting of snow but know that this was all water last evening and can only be the thinnest layer of ice on that area that was just open last evening.
We will keep you posted. Thank-you so very much for following us on our Webpage or/and our Facebook page!!!
